Pokémon types & type chart

About Pokémon types

There are certain kinds for each Pokémon creature and each of its moves. Each kind has various offensive and defensive strengths and drawbacks. Use Pokémon and techniques in combat that have a type advantage over your adversary's; doing so will do a lot more damage than usual.

You will do twice as much damage if you have a single-type advantage (for example, a Water attack against a Ground-type Pokémon). A double-type advantage, such as a Water attack against a Ground/Rock-type Pokémon, will result in quadruple damage because the advantages stack. You will see the message in each of these situations. After the attack, in-game, it's very effective.

An advantage of a single or double type, on the other hand, will deal half and a quarter of regular damage, respectively. You may view the message here. In-game, it isn't particularly efficient.

You can also benefit from Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB). As the name suggests, if the attacking Pokémon is of the same type as the move being used (for instance, a Fire-type Pokémon utilizing a Fire-type move), the move's power is increased. The harm in this instance is 1.5 times average. When a Water-type Pokémon uses a Water-type move against a Ground/Rock-type Pokémon, the damage is multiplied by six (2×2×1.5), again in addition to any other benefits.

Type chart

The advantages and disadvantages of each kind are shown in the whole type chart here. Find the attacking type by looking down the left side, then walk across to check how successful it is against each type of Pokémon.

Note: this graph only includes Pokémon X/Y, OR/AS, Sun/Moon, and games released after 2013. There are a few small variations in type charts for earlier games - see below.

Type chart changes

The type chart has stayed largely same over time, with a few tweaks here and there. While the Fairy type was introduced in Generation 6 (Pokémon X and Y), the Dark and Steel kinds were added in Generation 2. The differences from the type chart as it is now are shown below. The charts are available on the page for Old Type Charts.
